Weekly Check In

Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God… For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day…” (Exodus 20:9-10, 11 [ESV])

There is something beautiful about a week.

A week is longer than a day. You can mentally lose yourself for an entire day. A day (or two) can be lost on a crisis at work or home.

And a week is shorter than a month. In times of trial and suffering, a month feels like an eternity.

Let me encourage you to mark your weeks in this deployment and in this life. It’s biblical.

How are you to mark your weeks? Gather with the people of God to worship God. For those who are manning the homefront, stay invested in your local church! If you don’t have a local church, find one ASAP! For those who are deployed, find or create a weekly rhythm where Christians gather together to read the Bible aloud, pray aloud, and sing songs to and about God together.

Gather with other Christians- this is a godly weekly rhythm for all of life. But that’s not really what this article is about. During this deployment, on the day that you gather with the people of God, check in with your people. At a minimum, this is your spouse (if married), and your spiritual mentor.

For most of you, sending an email or text message each week is a good way to do this. One bonus of doing these check-ins via email is that you can save them and refer back to them throughout the deployment or even years later. Each week, answer each of these prompts and hit send.

  • I can see God’s Sovereign Hand in my life…
  • I can see God working in me…
  • I can see God working through me…
  • This week you can pray for me or tangibly help me…

Simple enough? Copy and paste those prompts into an email or text thread and write out a few short thoughts. Keep it short and repeatable. As with all spiritual disciplines, the compound interest over time is where the real fruit is found.

I love you guys,

Brian O’Day

[…] Weekly Check-ins. The temptation to become a hermit crab and hole up in your little shell will also be ever-present during this season. Establish a rhythm of reaching out to a few people on your Spiritual Deployment Support Team to check in with them and them know how you are doing. More details on this idea are here. […]
